Ella and her kind, compassionate heart

Thursday, January 16th, 2014

Today, Ella’s class did an activity during social studies.  I am going to use Colette’s description of the exercise in order to explain it…

Hello Parents,

Today in the Octopus classroom, as part of our Social Studies unit, Jasmin Hoo, our fantastic diversity director came in to lead an activity. She began by asking Ms. Kay to leave the room and then gave the Octopuses one simple direction. The direction was for the students to form a circle and then when Ms. Kay was asked to return, they were not to let her into the circle no matter what. They were told that they could do this in any way as long as they were still being safe with their bodies.

What followed was challenging to witness, but provided what we feel was a powerful learning opportunity. As Ms. Kay walked around and attempted to join the circle by asking students, many of our Octopuses began to laugh. Several students began to taunt her by chanting “Excluded, excluded” and pointing at her. Other students moved their bodies aside and told Ms. Kay that she could come over, but quickly moved their bodies back to block her when she would come over. Most of our students laughed and joined in on a variety of taunts. A few of our students did not laugh, but remained silent. When Ms. Kay asked those students if she could join their circle, they avoided eye contact with her but whispered “No” or shook their heads. As the activity progressed and Ms. Kay began to express frustration, sadness and finally resignation, those students and a few others began to look down at the floor and to show increasing discomfort. Then entire activity lasted for about five minutes before Jasmin and I stopped the activity and asked the group to reconvene.

Ella was one of the kids who was very upset – she remained silent – did not make eye contact.  She did tell Kay “no” when she asked to get into the circle but  Ella told me, “I thought we were playing a game and it turned out to be mean and I didn’t like it”.

The octopus class is working on bullying, being an advocate, being a good friend, how to take care of yourself etc.  This activity really shook Ella.

Later on during the day at free time, she sat down and wrote this card for Kay.

Sweet and wonderful times

Tuesday, December 31st, 2013

We are continuing to have such a wonderful time with grandma and papa.  This past week has been terrific.  We’re doing crazy touristy things and that means large crowds and patience.  All of the adults are making sure that we don’t forget to breathe.  Ella is having a blast.  On Sunday, we went to Pier 39 to the Aquarium by the Bay.  We always have fun there and this time we watched a 3-D movie on sharks which was beautiful and very informative.  Today, mommy had to go to work, but Ella, grandma, papa and I were very brave and went to the Academy along with the 16,000 other families who were in SF for the holidays.  After the Academy we took a beautiful walk around Stowe Lake and tonight played some great games.

Golf camp and Ella’s first non-fiction book

Tuesday, June 11th, 2013

Ella went to her first day of golf camp today.  She said that she had a great time.  We are going to have to go and spy on her during the week!  Here is a picture of Ella at home this morning before camp.

Next, here is Ella’s first non-fiction book.  She did this over a period of a few weeks at school.  She came up with the idea on her own and did the whole thing by herself.  We love everything about this book!

This is going to span about 2 weeks.  I’ll post the pictures and tell the story as I go along.

12.jpg22.jpg32.jpg42.jpg This was about 2 weeks ago.  We took Ella and Juliet to Pet Pride behind the ballpark.  The girls had so much fun together and Panda made a new friend!

52.jpg Here is a shot of Sakura (in Japan!) during a Skype session that we had.  I blocked out Ella accidentally when I was taking the picture, but I put a movie at the end of Ella showing Sakura how well she pogo sticks.  It was so cool doing the Skype conversation.  Sakura took us all over her apartment, showed us the view outside, played the piano for us and of course showed us her entire Powerpuff Girl collection!

8.jpg9.jpg10.jpg111.jpgHere is Ella’s latest and greatest book.  She wrote about getting her green belt.  It has been wonderful watching her storytelling evolve.  Her teacher says that she loves to write and tell stories.  Incredible stuff.

Sparring, Halloween and the World Series

Sunday, October 28th, 2012

Today was a beautiful day and a fun day and it ended up to be an incredible night with the Giants winning game 3 of the world series 2-0!  Sunny and I watched the game at home with Debby and Toby.  Ella went to a Halloween party with the Kim/Arena clan.  Ella had a great night and so did we!  Ella did some more sparring at Taekwondo today.  The kids are more than a foot taller than she is.  She was proud that she got a kick in.

1.jpg26.jpg Ella is such a good sport!  She was trying pretty hard today.

The weekend

Monday, September 10th, 2012

We started off the weekend having a delicious dinner at Koh Samui and the Monkey without Ella because Ella was having a movie night and sleep over with Juliet and KJ!  Everyone had a great night!  The Giants even beat the Dodgers.  On Saturday morning, We went to the CDS Welcome Picnic where I sold sweatshirts, Sunny talked to a number of parents, and Ella played!  On Saturday afternoon, Ella went back to TaeKwonDo.  She loved it agin and is going to stick with it during the school year.  We had dinner with my aunt and uncle on Saturday night at Eliza’s our favorite Chinese food restaurant in SF.  It was delicious.  This morning, Mommy went to spin class while Ella and I met up with Hanna and Megan for breakfast at the Crossroads cafe.  After breakfast Ella took a great bike ride – she is a changed rider for the best and then we went to the ballpark for Strike Out Violence Day.  It was a great day – great ceremony.

Marshmallow Mustache

Saturday, June 30th, 2012

Ella, Stella and Juliet were in Rock band Land Camp this week.  They all worked really hard on writing a story, making it into a song and then performing it.  We had the pleasure and honor to see their performance today.  They were all outstanding!  Ella rocked the drums and Stella and Juliet rocked the vocals.  Here’s the video.  More pics later.

Ella the musician is coming out all over the place!

Friday, June 29th, 2012

Ella, Stella and Juliet are in Rock Band Land Camp this week.  They are having  blast!  Ella loves having the girls at her school and the girls are meeting lots of Ella’s friends.  The band has a concert tomorrow (today if you’re reading this on Friday) and papa is coming to town in the afternoon.  He is going to get to see the performance and Ella is so excited for papa to see her and of course for Ella to see papa.  In a few days, we get to see the rest of the beautiful family – grandma, AJ, Milo and so many wonderful friends.  We’ll miss mommy but she’ll be joining us for a very long weekend so that is amazing.  Back to the music…last week, when we went to Benihana with Kristen and Emmi, Kristen got the girls little note pads.  They both started writing like crazy once we sat down.  Emma wrote a really sweet letter to Ella about being friends forever even though sometimes they get mad at each other, they really do love each other.  Ella said that she was writing a song but she didn’t want us to see it.  Of course, I snuck and read it and then was so blown away that I took a picture of it.  Here it is:

113.jpg28.jpg

It says, “I love the sweet love that I, every morning wake up with.  It’s so rare for some people but I am going to fly.  I am going to fly but maybe temporary.  Whether I am shaped like a domino it doesn’t matter so I am going to fly,  I am”.  Deep stuff.  I admitted that I read it and she was a little mad but also really happy that I loved it so much.  She won’t tell me the melody.

When I went to pick the girls up from camp the other day, I couldn’t find them until I headed over to the farm.  They were all working hard raking hay.  Here are a few iPhone shots.

38.jpg48.jpg55.jpg OUr little urban farmers.

67.jpg In the beginning of the week, Panda ripped his fingernail almost off.  He had to get it removed.  Here he is post surgery.  He was pretty doped up, but still very sweet.

76.jpg84.jpg92.jpg Here is Ella seriously rehearsing her song from Friday.  She’s actually going to be drumming during this song.
